How to file — step by step

1
Search for conflicts first
Go to tmsearch.uspto.gov and search "Sideline Studio" and "Sideline" in Class 042. If nothing similar comes up you're clear to file.
2
Create a USPTO account
Go to uspto.gov/trademarks/apply → create a free account → start a TEAS Plus application. TEAS Plus is $250/class and has the strictest requirements but is the cheapest path.
3
Fill in the application
Owner name: your legal name or "Sideline Studio Co." if you've formed an LLC. Mark: SIDELINE STUDIO (standard characters). Class 042. Description: "Providing online non-downloadable software for sports schedule parsing, tournament tracking, and calendar integration for parents of youth athletes."
4
Upload your specimen
Take a screenshot of your website showing "Sideline Studio" in the header with the tool visible and functional. This proves the mark is in use in commerce. Save as a JPG and upload.
5
Pay and submit
$250 per class via credit card. You'll receive a serial number immediately. The USPTO will examine your application within 8–12 months. If approved it publishes for opposition for 30 days, then you receive your registration certificate.
6
Consider forming an LLC first
If you plan to file the trademark in a business name rather than your personal name, form the LLC first (about $70–$100 in most states via your state's Secretary of State website). This separates your personal assets from the business and looks more professional on the trademark filing.
This guide is for informational purposes only and does not constitute legal advice. For a trademark with commercial value, consider a one-time consultation with a trademark attorney before filing. Many offer flat-fee filings for $400–$800 including the USPTO fee.
